SDGs: UN’s blueprint to wipe out poverty, inequality
Adopted unanimously by the 193-Member United Nations General Assembly in 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a blueprint for peace and prosperity in the long and short term. The adoption of the SDGs has also marked the Organization’s 70th anniversary.
Ambitious goals
The development blueprint comprises 17 goals and 169 targets to wipe out poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change over the next 15 years. The United Nations has called for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.
Tackling deprivations and climate change
The SDGs primarily seek to end poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, and other deprivations, hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and spur economic growth – while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
The SDGs build on decades of work by countries and the UN, including the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
A key role
Today, the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) provides substantive support and capacity-building for the SDGs and their related thematic issues, including water, energy, climate, oceans, urbanization, transport, science and technology, the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR), partnerships and Small Island Developing States. DSDG plays a vital role in evaluating UN system-wide implementation of the 2030 Agenda and in advocacy and outreach activities relating to the SDGs. To make the 2030 Agenda a reality, broad ownership of the SDGs must translate into a strong commitment by all stakeholders to implement the global goals.
Alignment
The private sector forms a key part of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 17 (partnerships), with the expectation they will contribute with capital investment in the face of dwindling public resources.
Being development-oriented, InNations will shed light on the goals of UN’s SDGs in subsequent issues to raise awareness about this ambitious blueprint aligning it with its goals.
